Vet Expert Benzoic Shampoo contains benzoyl peroxide. The mechanism of benzoyl peroxide is multi-faceted. It has antibacterial activity, keratolytic effects, and anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness and swelling. Keratolytics work by dissolving or breaking down the keratin in the outermost layers of the skin. This results in removal of dead skin cells as well as reducing skin thickening (hyperkeratosis). By thinning the outer layer of the skin, they help medications penetrate the skin more effectively.
Camelids frequently develop scaly, crusty skin problems, and these are frequently caused by mange mites. Regardless of the mite, the changes in the skin are similar. The skin reacts to the insult by producing extra layers of skin and these layers then become scaly and crusty. The skin also becomes very itchy. Benzoic shampoo helps relieve the itch but also address the underlying changes that are going on in the skin. If treating mange, it is important to also use a prescription medication to address this. Using shampoo in conjunction with the specific mite-killing treatment will provide much-needed relief for affected animals but also help improve the appearance of the skin over time.
Benzoyl Peroxide Action: Contains benzoyl peroxide, which has strong oxidizing properties that help reduce bacteria and inflammation while promoting collagen synthesis and skin healing.
Antibacterial Properties: Benzoyl peroxide releases active oxygen, inhibiting the growth of anaerobic bacteria, and eliminating inflammatory lesions.
Penetrates Deeply: Easily passes through the skin’s outer layer, where it is metabolised in keratinocytes to benzoic acid and then eliminated from the body, ensuring effective treatment.
Instructions for Using Vet Expert Benzoic Shampoo:
Wet skin/hair with lukewarm water. Use a sponge to apply Benzoic Shampoo and work up a good lather, working it into the cracks and crevices in the skin. Disposable Scrub brushes are ideal for this as there is a sponge on one side and soft bristles on the other. Continue to massage it into all affected areas for 20 minutes’ contact time. Protect animal’s eyes and ears during bathing. Rinse thoroughly.
If treating mange, you will need to get a prescription product (from your vet) to treat the mange appropriately, depending on whether the animal has chorioptic or sarcoptic mange.
Repeat bathing 2-3 times weekly for a few weeks until improvement is observed, then as required.
