Complete rehydration supplement for young animals
Enerlyte® Plus is a complete rehydration supplement, designed for calves and piglets, but suitable for crias too! It is indicated to support physiological digestion by stabilising water and electrolyte balance during periods of, or recovery from, diarrhoea.
Oral rehydration therapy is an important component of the treatment of diarrhoea as it helps restore sodium levels, correct acidosis and provides energy. Dehydrated crias can often have a decreased appetite, and the vanilla flavouring of Enerlyte® Plus gives it excellent palatability.
One sachet of Enerlyte® Plus easily mixes with 2 litres of warm water and can be fed 2 to 3 times a day for 2 to 7 days, in addition to separate normal milk consumption. Given the smaller size of crias, you could divide the sachet into 2 equal portions and mix with 1 litre of water to avoid waste. I suggest putting it into a smaller container alongside a regular water bucket in the stall. If needed you could also bottle feed this, and alternate with milk feeding.
What’s in Enerlyte® Plus Rehydration Supplement?
Electrolytes – sodium, chloride and potassium, which promote the absorption of water from the gut.
Bicarbonate – provides buffering to limit acidosis, a common side-effect of diarrhoea.
Lactose – the intake of lactose stimulates lactase enzymes that produce glucose. This glucose is absorbed providing nutritional support and aids efficient reabsorption of sodium and water. [The lactose makes this product unsuitable for adults because they lack the lactase enzymes to convert lactose into glucose, therefore may worsen diarrhoea.]
Whey protein promotes absorption of milk.
Probiotic – helps to repopulate the gut with good bacteria.
Rice and carob flour – help improve faecal consistency.
Vitamin E and Selenium – powerful antioxidants: protective elements of the intestinal mucosa and stimulators of immune defences.
Not suitable for post-weaned camelids, calves, lambs, or goat kids.
