Develop Confidence with Camelids

This online camelid health course for vets will provide an introduction to the veterinary management of camelids. The objective of this course is to arm the general practice vet with sufficient confidence with which to approach most of the common scenarios seen in practice. There is an optional practical training session that will take place at Camelid Veterinary Services in Oxfordshire. Attendees that elect to do the practical training will learn useful tips for handling and evaluating alpacas. They will also have the opportunity to practice their clinical and diagnostic skills.

The Camelid Health Course for Vets is 9 weeks in duration and starts on Monday 16th January 2023. Live online training sessions (webinars) will take place at 4.00pm UK time on each date shown in the schedule. [11.00am Eastern Standard Time (US); 5.00pm Central European Time]

*** I am pleased to reconfirm our partnership with the British Alpaca Society to offer subsidised training to up to 20 UK-resident vets per year to attend this course. See notes below on how to access this funding.

The course will cover:

  • Key anatomical and physiological differences of camelids as compared to other domestic large animal species.
  • Routine on farm procedures such as restraint, venipuncture including catheter placement, castration, nasolacrimal duct flushes and vaccinations.
  • How to approach the sick Camelid, including diagnostic selection and emergency management.
  • Camelid parasite issues, both internal and external.
  • Reproductive emergencies.
  • Management of newborn crias.
  • Dental management.

Taught by the UK’s only RCVS Recognised Specialist in Camelid Health & Production, you will have ample opportunity for questions – there is no such thing as a stupid question!

Suitable for all vets working with camelids.

Funding opportunity from the British Alpaca Society

The British Alpaca Society (BAS) have recognised that there is a deficit in camelid-specific training among vets in the UK and that the costs of CPD may be a barrier to vets completing training in a species that may only cover a small proportion of their workload. BAS have therefore decided to try and bridge this gap by offering subsidies to UK-resident vets to help offset the costs of training.

All of the course elements as well as the practical session must be attended in order to qualify to receive funding from BAS of £290 +VAT. Therefore, course cost to you as a participant will be only £247 +VAT. The funding will be obtained as a reimbursement from BAS after completion of the course.

To secure funding for a place on the course, please download and submit the brief application form to The British Alpaca Society by email: [email protected]. After BAS have confirmed that you are successful in gaining a place, complete the course registration and pay in full online here. You must complete a separate registration for each delegate: practice discounts for multiple vets are not available if using this offer.

Practical Session to supplement the Camelid Health Course for Vets

There will be an optional half day practical session for those able to physically attend our clinic in South East Oxfordshire on Friday 24th March. This may be divided in two sessions (am or pm) depending on numbers. This practical half-day session will include training in practical alpaca handling skills, toenail trimming, dental evaluation, body condition scoring, venipuncture (using an alpaca venipuncture model), blood smear preparation, and abdominal ultrasound examination. The practical session costs £140 +VAT per person. Please indicate whether or not you would like to attend this when you register.

*** Please note that attendance of the practical session is compulsory for delegates receiving funding from BAS. Therefore, please select the appropriate option that includes the practical session fee on registering.

Testimonials

“What an excellent course. The content was extremely comprehensive, relevant and was expertly delivered by Claire. The course content covered basic handling and husbandry for those less familiar with camelids right through to preventative medicine, cases, diagnostics and treatments likely to be encountered in practice. Fantastic notes and formulary provided!
As a non farm animal vet ( owning alpacas), I have come away with sufficient skills and confidence to manage my own herd and advise other owners accordingly. I would strongly recommend this course to vets at all skill and knowledge levels.” – Candy Hill

“Thank you Claire for a really engaging course. It has given me so much more confidence to be able to deal with the increasing number of alpacas on our books effectively. I found the webinars on common conditions and parasite control particularly useful and have already utilised some of this knowledge for my own clinical cases. The practical session was also great fun and made me much more likely to pick up an ultrasound scanner to use as part of my investigations.” – Hannah Sharkey
