This an intensive two-day course, aimed at anyone breeding alpacas or llamas.
The first day is devoted entirely to camelid reproduction. This includes learning about male and female reproductive anatomy and physiology and how to get the best success when breeding your animals. We will discuss common reproductive problems so that you have a better idea what to do when things aren’t going according to plan, and the types of reproductive emergencies experienced in order to help you better prepare for these. There will also be a presentation on assisted reproduction in camelids, including embryo transfer.
The second day takes the form of a “Neonatal Clinic” and turns our attention to the neonatal cria in terms of what’s normal, what isn’t, and what to do in the case of problems. We will discuss the birthing process and provide practical tips on what you may need to do in an emergency. This second day also includes a practical session giving you the opportunity to learn how to recognise and potentially correct a difficult birthing and helps you understand when you need to call the vet to come and help.
You will be provided with a comprehensive set of notes to take home with you at the end of the course and to which you may refer at your leisure!
Lunch and refreshments are included on both days of the course. Be sure to let us know of any dietary restrictions when making your booking. For those attending both days of the course, we usually arrange a dinner locally on the evening of the first day so that you can get together with the other course participants and chat about all things alpaca and llama!
